If you have any interest in the history of magic then you will love this set of three of the most interesting effects in the history of card magic.
When the Elmsley Count was still a secret known by only a few select insiders, Dai Vernon took this simple concept and turned it into an elegant demonstration of magic that only uses 4 cards. It was an attempt, almost an exercise, to maximize the effects possible through the most minimalistic movements. As it true with the successfully simplistic, the routine has become a staple in the repertoire of the finest card men in the world.
Card Warp represents a true conceptual leap in the evolution of card magic, in that the cards don’t just do magical things. Magic actually happens to two cards in a visually, physical way that is undeniably impossible.
Roy Walton, the creator of the effect, is such a charming guy that he couldn’t believe we tracked him down in Scotland just so I could ask his permission to include this effect. He told me that others have used it before, but that nobody had ever bothered to ask his permission before!
The first time I ever saw this effect, a magician was doing it on television many years ago, and I still remember the impact it had on me. In fact, now that I think about it, the close ups you can show as the magic takes places would make this a great effect for the current round of talk shows!
Dr. Jacob Daley was a successful physician whose great escape was his passion for magic. Card magic, specifically. Dai Vernon told me Dr. Daley was an amateur magician who had more skill with cards than 99% of the professional magicians.
The legend goes that Dr. Daley was unusually eager for the performance portion of the New York Magic Club meeting because he had a new, favorite card effect he wanted everyone to see. Eventually, he had his chance to perform and he did, indeed, make a big impression on everyone in the room with this effect.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that he then took his bow, went back to his seat, set down and died.
That’s the legend. I don’t know if it’s true but that’s the story connected to this effect for over 50 years, and it’s really cool to think the beautiful simplicity of the plot and handling of this effect is going to keep his name alive forever in the history of magic!
Following the Performance and Explanation of each effect I repeat the explanation with an over-the-shoulder SuperPractice Session to reinforce every move of these amazing routines! Following all the explanations and SuperPractice reviews, I then reveal the Real Secret to what makes each effect so powerful.
